Pasque Flower

Pasque Flower is the first native flower to bloom in the tallgrass prairie. It is often found on west-facing slopes in large colonies. Frost and snow do not deter this little herald of spring. The Dakota Indians sang at the appearance of the pasque flower to encourage other flowers to follow.

Prairie Sage is an aromatic, silver-white plant. It is not related to the herb sage used in cooking. Prairie sage has been used extensively by Native Americans for medicinal and religious purposes. Its powers and properties were believed to drive away sore throats, mosquitos, evil spirits, morbid odors and bad luck, among other things. It is a fairly aggressive plant in a garden setting, and requires confinement or competition to prevent a thick stand.

Swamp Milkweed

Butterfly Weed is a striking addition to perennial landscaping. As the name implies, this milkweed attracts butterflies, including monarchs. It is fairly easy to establish. Its ability to grow on dry slopes is the reason this plant may be seen growing along roadsides in Iowa. The deep tap root makes this plant difficult to transplant after the first year.
